Today we are each going to share with you three books that have helped us as writers. Now, to be perfectly honest, most of my “learning” when it comes to writing was done online by following some awesome blogs, but I did find some great books that focus more on the publishing and marketing side of things, so here are my three favorites that I have read!

Where Do I Start by Molly Evangeline
My mini review: This book was so helpful! It was short, to the point and easy to comprehend. I would highly recommend it if you are considering being an author. I went the Indi publishing route and am so happy that I did. I will probably do a more in-depth post on why later, but seriously, this book helped me so much. All those little bits of information and questions that you don’t know to ask. . . this book answers them!

My Mini Review: This book really helped me as well. I hate marketing. I think everyone probably does. I don’t want to be that pushy salesperson but I found out through this book that that isn’t what marketing is. Marketing is really presenting your product in the most attractive way possible and knowing the ins and outs of what people look for. The title really intrigued me because I don’t have a ton of time to market, so I was hooked by that alone. But I am really happy that I read this. I plan on buying the paperback so I can use it and mark it up.

Goodreads for Authors by Michelle Campbell Scott
My Mini Review: This book was also very helpful. The first half discussed the ins and outs of Goodreads in case you are starting from the ground up, but after that, the info got SUPER helpful. From how to interact to others and how to treat reviewers and even how to get your book out there more. I found it very informational and it is short, so it makes a quick read.

Hi! I don’t have any writing books to recommend (except some of the ones that are on the other blogs =), but I do have a fiction book I’m enjoying quite well right now. It’s called “London in the Dark.” Perhaps you have heard of it? So far my favorite thing about it is that my favorite character, though almost perfect, seems real too. The author managed a very good balance there. =P And somehow the name “Dudley” doesn’t sound so odd as it once did.

I actually haven’t read any writing books. *blush* So many of them look so dry, and I’ve found loads of great advice for free on various online blogs and forums. It’s just been easier for me to swallow that kind of thing in smaller increments. One blog I’ve subscribed to is http://inkandquills.com/ which has had some good articles. I would also recommend the course Karen Kingsbury has been offering through Liberty University. https://www.liberty.edu/ce/enroll/#/school/KKN There’s a fee since it’s through LU’s Continuing Education program, but you don’t have to be an LU student or graduate to take it. It took it last year and while Mrs. Kingsbury mainly talks about things from the perspective of a Contemporary Christian Fiction writer, there was plenty of general information that was applicable for me as a fantasy/fairy tale retelling writer. There are suggestions for writing exercises you could do to practice what you learned, but nothing is required aside from a very short and easy quiz that follows every video. There’s also nothing to purchase aside from the course itself and you do everything at your own pace. 8 lessons total, as I recall. I found it very informative and since it’s taught from a Christian perspective, very uplifting as well. #ShamelesslyPromotingMyAlmaMater :p
The books you shared do look interesting, though. I think I’d like to try getting traditionally published before I consider indie publishing, but I’m sure that book would be good to have for the sake of possible future reference. My B.S. Degree was actually Interdisciplinary Studies in Theology and…wait for it…Business Marketing. But even I can’t say I like marketing very much. 😉 Sounds like that “5-minute Book Marketing” book would be a great resource! I’m very interested in “Goodreads for Authors” too, and of course, “The Emotion Thesaurus”. They would both be very useful. 🙂
Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for all of that information! That will be very useful and I am super interested in that course! I love the marketing book because it isn’t so salesy. I really dislike that approach, so I found it super helpful! And I am subscribed to the ink and quills blog. Also, I actually had a hard time writing this post for the reason that I (up until the last few months) haven’t read any writing books. I mostly follow sites that I read posts like you. Super helpful that way and a great way to learn, I agree. Thank you for the comment! Blessings!
